It is the capacity to notice when an argument requires an assumption that has not been justified, to identify when two positions that appear contradictory are actually using the same term in different senses, and to hold genuine uncertainty without collapsing it prematurely into a confident position that the evidence does not support. These capacities are transferable across every domain of practical life in ways that make the investment in developing them one of the best cognitive returns available.
