What It Gets Right
The strongest thing about this work is also the thing most likely to be undervalued in immediate critical response: its restraint. In a cinema landscape where maximalism is the default register for anything with a significant budget β where restraint reads as timidity rather than confidence β the choice to trust the material rather than amplify it is a genuine creative position. The scenes that land hardest are the quiet ones, which is either the most basic truth about cinema or a truth that needs to be rediscovered every generation.
The performances are the argument for the film made in human terms. The lead performance specifically achieves something technically observable even if harder to describe: a consistency of internal life across scenes with very different surface requirements. The comedy scenes do not feel like breaks from the drama; the dramatic scenes do not feel like strain after the comedy. This consistency is rarer than it should be and results from a directorial intelligence that was clear about what kind of film it was making before a single frame was shot.
Where It Struggles
The structural problem in the second act is real and would have been addressable in development. The narrative momentum established with considerable skill in the first act dissipates across a stretch of scenes that are individually defensible but collectively redundant β restating character dynamics the first act already established rather than complicating them. The film recovers, but the recovery takes longer than it should, and a sharper editor would have cut two scenes without losing a single thing the film needs.
The Verdict
This is not a perfect film. It is something more interesting: a film genuinely trying to do something specific and largely succeeding, in a context where most films are trying to do something generic and failing. That distinction matters more than any individual execution flaw, and it is the reason this film will be remembered when better-executed but less purposeful films from the same season are forgotten. Recommended β with full awareness of its limitations, which is the only honest way to recommend anything actually worth seeing.
